Lateral line repair and replacement

The lateral lines are where the system actually disposes of water. When they fail, problems return within days of every pump-out.

Signs the laterals are the problem

  • A soggy or spongy area, or surfacing water, over the field
  • Bright green strips of grass over the trenches
  • A sewage smell outdoors, often worse after rain
  • Backups that return soon after the tank was pumped

Why lateral fields fail at the lake

Ozarks soil is often thin, with rock and bedrock close to the surface, and many lake lots are steep. That leaves less soil to treat and absorb water, so fields are sensitive to overloading. Solids from a tank that is not pumped on schedule seal the soil, and holiday-weekend crowds push more water through than the field was sized for. Problems with failing septic systems around the lake have been covered by local news for years (Columbia Missourian).

Repair or replace?

A shifted distribution box or one failed trench can often be repaired. A field with sealed soil throughout usually needs replacing, sometimes with a different design suited to shallow soil. Ask your contractor to explain which you need, in writing, before you agree to a replacement.

Permits

In Camden County, replacing the tank and laterals needs a county permit, a soil test and an inspection. See how the permit process works.

Common questions

How long do lateral lines last?

Many last 20 years or more with regular pumping. Overloading, skipped pump-outs and shallow soil shorten that.

Can a failed field be fixed without replacing it?

Sometimes. A clogged or crushed line, or one bad trench, can often be repaired.
